Project: Major International Shipping|Disaster Recovery Setup

Client Background

The client is a long-established Asian shipping company specializing in dry bulk transport on major global routes. With a modern fleet, they provide reliable logistics for steel, energy, and trading partners.

To meet digital transformation and sustainability goals, the company is upgrading IT systems, adopting smart fleet management for better visibility, and gradually implementing ESG reporting and fuel emission monitoring to become a more modern, low-carbon, and competitive business.

Challenges

The client relies on a critical vessel management system for ship scheduling, crew rostering, and integration with BPM and AD authentication. System downtime would halt operations. To prevent disruptions from hardware failures or data center issues, the client aimed to restore operations on a cloud-based backup within 4 hours, ensuring uninterrupted service.

Our Solutions

We helped the client implement AWS Disaster Recovery Service (AWS DRS), which continuously replicates system data and configurations to the cloud. In case of a disaster, the backup can be quickly activated with a single click to restore operations.

For this complex multi-system environment, we also prepared automated scripts to switch settings rapidly, ensuring full recovery within the planned 4-hour window.

Implementation Results

Previously, disaster recovery required building a full secondary data center—costly and hard to maintain. By adopting AWS DRS, the client cut costs by nearly 90%, paying only minimal storage fees routinely and compute costs only during drills or actual incidents.

This flexible setup reduces business interruption risk and gives the IT team greater confidence in handling unexpected events.
