Project: Major Department Store|Website Cloud Migration

Client Background

The client, a major retail chain in Taiwan with many physical stores, has pursued digital transformation with digital membership, mobile payments, e-coupons, and personalized notifications for a seamless shopping experience.

As online traffic grew, their system—built for physical stores—faced performance issues during promotions, and maintenance costs rose. To address this, they engaged a cloud transformation consulting team to modernize the architecture and migrate to the cloud, enhancing stability and flexibility.

Challenges

The company’s official website network, composed of multiple sub-sites, has grown over the past decade with new features and increasing users. This expansion brought maintenance challenges—unstable performance, difficult updates, and security concerns—becoming an operational burden.

The cloud migration is thus more than a “move”; it’s a full system overhaul aimed at creating a more stable, maintainable, and secure environment.

Our Solutions

We helped this department store migrate a system spanning 4 servers and over 20 websites to AWS, covering system inventory, data consolidation, performance optimization, and security enhancement. Our approach included:

Planning & Assessment
Two months were spent mapping all site architectures and data flows to ensure seamless migration. We collaborated with the client to design the new cloud architecture and migration process.

Database Migration
Performed one-time downtime backup and restoration to move databases to AWS cloud services, ensuring data integrity, security, and future scalability.

System Transfer & Rebuild
Using AWS disaster recovery, we migrated servers “as-is” to the cloud, created a test environment, and optimized code and architecture.

Optimization & Modernization

  • Moved static assets to AWS S3 and CloudFront for faster load times.
  • Redesigned code logic and database access for high availability.
  • Strengthened security with WAF and cloud certificate management.
  • Standardized code (Big5 → UTF-8), implemented version control and CI/CD.
  • Separated internal and external communications for improved security and flexibility.
  • Automated scheduled tasks via AWS, with monitoring dashboards for ongoing optimization.

Implementation Results

The system migration and upgrade delivered clear results:

🚀 Avoided costs for additional hardware.
🚀 Reduced operational expenses by ~30% through performance optimization and flexible resource allocation.
🚀 Built a stable, secure cloud environment capable of handling peak traffic.
🚀 Streamlined architecture by removing unused components.
